The Parent Support Service Professional Approach
Assessment
The focus of the assessment, whether in person, on the phone or via email, is to gain a detailed understanding of the child behaviour problems about which you are concerned and the various factors which may be triggering and maintaining the difficulties.
Formulation & Progression
After the assessment, two individualised resources will be created for you: i) a Formulation and ii) a Progress Plan. These resources will be either be emailed to you (comprehensive remote support clients) or given to you (face-to-face support clients). |
PSS Individualised Parenting Resources:
The Formulation
The formulation provides a clear, comprehensive and meaningful map of the current situation with links to the past and ways out for the future. It is an essential in-between step for planning an individualised intervention which fits you and your child’s unique circumstances and needs.
Often, when things have gradually become difficult over a long period of time, or when many different factors are all contributing at various levels, it can be hard to spot why things keep going wrong. The formulation will help to provide meaning and hope for how these difficulties can be resolved for the future.
The Progress Plan
A clear, step-step, practical, personal Progress Plan will be developed for you, based on the unique circumstances of your family. The plan will lead on naturally from the formulation and will be grounded in relevant psychological theories and research.
The Progress Plan may include strategies such as: adopting new communication patterns with your child; increasing positive interactions with them; developing alternative responses to problem child behaviours, or perhaps establishing new routines or activities. |
